What students learn
Students learn a wide range of subjects in the NSW curriculum. They build skills, think creatively and prepare for life beyond school.
Year 9
In Year 9 students commence a two year course of study. For Year 9 they will be able to choose THREE elective subjects. The following documents are those given to the students to help with the process of choosing.

At our school, we give the right support to help gifted learners to grow and do their best.

Cheltenham Girls’ High School is committed to nurturing student growth and intellectual curiosity through a supportive and inclusive environment. The school empowers students to work at an academic level relevant to their ability. Students identified as having high potential in specific academic domains may be invited to participate in one of Cheltenham Girls’ High School’s accelerated learning pathways.
Cheltenham Girls’ High School offers accelerated courses in Years 8 - 11. Entry into accelerated courses require a specific academic criteria and maturity. Due to the high level of academic rigour, students are selected using a variety of data. This ensures the placement in these classes suits the needs and abilities of all the students in the class. Entry into these courses is by invitation only.
Students completing an accelerated program at Cheltenham Girls’ High School meet all NESA Stage 5 requirements for their Stage 5 RoSA. The number of accelerated courses is based on individual need and ability and is assessed on an individual basis.
HSC Accelerated Aboriginal Studies
This program provides highly capable students in literacy with increased academic challenge and the opportunity to engage with Stage 6 content while in Stage 5. Students develop advanced research, inquiry, critical thinking and communication skills while gaining a deeper understanding of Aboriginal cultures, histories and contemporary issues.
Students are selected through a comprehensive selection process for this course at the end of Term 2 in Year 8. Selection is based in internal testing, external testing, Year 7 Semester 1 and 2 school reports and the Year Advisor recommendation, which is based on the students’ work ethic and classroom application.
Selected students commence the Preliminary HSC Aboriginal Studies course in Year 9 and begin the HSC course in Term 4 of Year 10. They then complete their HSC examination in Term 4 of Year 11.
HSC Accelerated Mathematics
Accelerated Mathematics is designed for students who demonstrate exceptional mathematical ability and can successfully manage an accelerated pace of learning. The program commences in Year 8, with students selected through a range of measures including Year 7 assessment performance and teacher recommendations.
Students in the Accelerated Mathematics Program complete the Year 8 and Year 9 Mathematics curriculum within a single calendar year through a compacted course of study. This enables them to commence the Year 10 Pathway 3 Mathematics course in Year 9 and provides the opportunity to begin Stage 6 Mathematics Advanced studies in Year 10.
Due to the compacted nature of the Accelerated Mathematics Program, students who complete Year 8 through the mainstream pathway are unable to transfer into the accelerated class at the end of Year 8. Exceptions may only be considered for students new to the school in Year 8, who can demonstrate completion of equivalent content and the academic readiness required for accelerated study.
At our school, students can take part in special religious education (SRE) or special education in ethics (SEE) classes. These classes are delivered by approved providers.
When enrolling your child, you’ll be able to choose an option from the approved providers offered at our school. Students not attending SRE or SEE are given supervised alternative meaningful activities.
