About our school

Cheltenham Girls' High School was established as a local comprehensive high school in 1958. The school is located on the magnificent former residential estate of the Vicars family, a family linked to the early history of Parramatta and which had established a woollen mill there. A segment of the stained glass window from the original home which illustrates the cultural context of that time is mounted in the school foyer.

The founding principal, Miss Bessie Mitchell, an outstanding educator, was later awarded an MBE for her services to education. In September 1998 the school was saddened by her death but more significantly, inspired by her life and her importance to the school. The school values its history and celebrates its heritage as the bequest for all current students who continue to strengthen our heritage and culture and create new traditions as well.

We continue to celebrate outstanding student achievement across the comprehensive range of interests and abilities as measured by exceptional results in the School Certificate (SC) tests and High School Certificate (HSC) examinations. We also achieve and maintain a standard of excellence across a broad band of curriculum enrichment programs. Also valued is the strong partnership between staff, students and parents, a partnership which contributes significantly to the success and reputation of the school. Emphasis is placed on open and regular communication between all three groups.

The school also values its relationships with the wider community including former students and parents, the Cheltenham Old Girls' Association, local schools including primary schools and Epping Boys' High School, local universities and TAFE colleges, local businesses, community organisations and our residential neighbours.
